The Crystal Clear Shores Of Lake Huron At Sauble Beach Ontario

Waterfalls and sandy beaches were on the agenda for today, as we checked out Sauble Falls Provincial Park and the resort town of Sauble Beach on the sandy shores of Lake Huron, Ontario.

May 25, 2008:
Our first main stop was at the Sauble Falls Provincial Park. We actually drove past it at first until we realised where we were - the signage for it is not so clear. We headed down to the water's edge below the falls which are a series of cascades the width of the river. The jagged rocks beneath the waterfall are dolomite, a soft limestone, which is typical of the Niagara Escarpment. The dolomite has been eroded away irregularly which has created an interesting series of cascades and drop-offs.

Our next and final stop was at the nearby Sauble Beach, a summer resort town on the shores of Lake Huron. It is dubbed as one of Canada's top beaches and with an 11 km stretch of sandy beach it is easy to see why. The relatively shallow beach offers a fairly safe environment for the whole family and what's more, the water is warm. It is also known as a great place to watch vivid sunsets over Lake Huron.

Turning towards the east again we drove to the outskirts of the town of Meaford and found a campground with a panoramic view over Georgian Bay. Roebuck Campground is a fairly new complex with fully serviced sites and decent facilities. Tomorrow we needed to visit the Ford dealer in town to have a fuse checked under the hood of the truck, and possibly replaced. We realized this morning that the truck wasn't charging the camper batteries while we drove as it's supposed to - not a good thing when we want to head out for a spot of wilderness camping - with no electrical hookup!
